Packing & Organizing
- Finish packing – Have everything boxed and labeled unless you paid for packing service.
- Label clearly – Each box should have the room name and a short description.
- Set aside “Do Not Pack” items – Things you’ll move yourself (valuables, important docs, medications, overnight bags).
- Disassemble furniture – Beds, tables, shelves if not included in moving service. Keep hardware in labeled bags taped to furniture.
- Unplug appliances & electronics – Defrost fridge/freezer at least 24 hrs before, disconnect washer/dryer, wrap cords.
- Organize garage/outdoor items – Drain gas/oil from equipment (lawnmowers, grills, etc.). Movers typically won’t take fuel.
Preparing the House
- Clear pathways – Remove rugs, doorstops, or clutter so movers don’t trip.
- Reserve elevators/parking – If in an apartment/condo, book elevator and notify management.
- Protect floors/walls – Lay down floor coverings if needed.
- Take photos of your home – Good for reference and deposit return if renting.
Logistics & Communication
- Confirm details – Double-check time, address, and services with the moving company. Male sure you sign a BOL before the movers leave your house.
- Ensure that you have your driver's phone number and the movers have the correct phone number from you for the trip.
- Have payment ready – Cash, check, or card, depending on their policy.
- Prepare a floor plan – Know where furniture should go in the new house.
- Give movers instructions – Point out fragile or heavy items, and any boxes that need priority unloading.
- Keep important documents with you – IDs, passports, contracts, medical papers.
Essentials for You & Family
- Pack overnight bags – Change of clothes, toiletries, phone chargers, medications.
- Set aside food/drinks – Snacks, water, and maybe pizza or sandwiches for the day.
- Pet/kid arrangements – Keep them safe and out of the way (friend, sitter, or separate room).
Pro tip: Movers love when everything is ready to roll out the door — it saves time, stress, and sometimes saves you money.
